Glufosinate ammonium is a non selective herbicide with low toxicity, high activity and broad spectrum. Its effective component is phosphinothicin (PPT). PPT is a structural analog of glutamate and competitively inhibits glutamine synthetase (GS) activity interferes with the synthesis of amino acids and glutamine. It is the shortage of glutamine that makes the body unable to detoxify ammonia, inhibits photosynthesis, and finally leads to plant death.
PPT is also commonly used as a selective marker to screen glufosinate resistant transgenic crops in plant genetic engineering. The bacterial bar (bialophos resistance) gene and pat (phosphinothricin acetyl transferase) gene that confer glufosinate resistance are isolated from different Streptomyces. Both genes can encode glufosinate acetyltransferase (PAT) to detoxify glufosinate into an inactive compound.
